We’ve had an amazing September so far. The kids have been going to school with suncream on and coming home in shirtsleeves. A really lovely start to term. But there’s nip in the air this week and so it’s time to think about school coats for the kids.
My kids’ coats this winter come courtesy of Marks & Spencer and they are of the innovative STORMWEAR™ variety which means they’re coated in a water, mud and oil repellent finish. In addition to this, all three coats are thermal.
It may have been foolish, but I allowed the kids to chose themselves from the selection available so the girls picked a pale pink one because it had a bow (the impractical shopping gene has been safely passed down). I did try to steer them towards a darker colour but they were adamant. I guess I’ll be fully testing the repellant abilities of these coats!
My son chose the navy, bless him.
All three took their current size – I find coats come up big in M&S.
G & K – Girls Hooded Long Padded Thermal Coat with STORMWEAR™ (age 1-7), C – Boys Thermal Padded Coat with STORMWEAR™ (age 3-14)
It’s been too warm to properly road test the coats but the quality (as you’d expect from M&S) is lovely, they are ‘really, really, really, totally warm’ and the kids are happy to wear them. So far, so good. I’ll update this post a few months on from now with how we’ve been getting on and how they’ve survived a few washes!
Thanks to M&S for kitting the kids out for colder days ahead and thank you for supporting the brands that support this blog.

Hi Avril
I’ve been enjoying your blog for a couple of years now from down under in Sydney, Australia. Whilst you’re always a season ahead of us Aussies, its all relevant and it never surprises me how fashion trends are a universal force and we all follow the trends despite having opposite seasons.
Australia appears to be a national of t-shirt wearers and our our laid back culture determines a more casual approach to dressing however we still like to dress up and keep on trend whenever possible so I do like to see the snapshots of everyday fashion and trends that you post – your choices are very wearable and easily sourced by the budget conscious.
I work in the Sydney central business district (with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge!!) and our weather can very easily determine what to wear. Funnily, its not uncommon to see female office workers out in the city at lunchtime wearing business attire and carrying the latest Mark Kors or Prada handbag but wearing rubber thongs (flip flops) for a comfortable walk to the shopping precinct; only to change back into high-heels once they return to the office. Could only happen in Australia I’m sure!!
Best wishes from down under and many thanks for keeping me posted.
Kind regards
Annette Pyle

This is my next job! Our school run, is a long one, so a quilted school coat thats longer is usually what I go for. Love cute bow detailing!
