#operationformaldress Part 2

14/03 - UPDATED to include another borrowed number....
Today I tried on some dresses. It was not very successful. The theme for the IN Glamour Awards is Old Hollywood....and as those of you who know me in 'real life' know, I like to meet a dress code brief very precisely (World Book Day/School's 80's day...I'm a force to be reckoned with when it comes to dress codes!)
So I really want to nail this theme...
(plus Jamie Dornan *might* be there and he will obviously fall in love with me if I get it right)
Here we go on the first 4 dresses....

Dress Number 1
This was already in my wardrobe - the only one that's not a noughtie's fashion crime
Pros - it's a good colour for me, it fits (it's a 12), it's a good cut for me, I own it
Cons - it's not Hollywood Glamour, it's not full length, it's a tiny bit noughties and there are photos of me on Facebook wearing it at the last formal I went to;
Verdict - NO

Dress Number 2
This is one of the two my friend Claire loaned me. This is a sparkly number from Monsoon. Still with labels on and by the way, she's looking to sell it if anyone's interested!
Pros - Definitely Hollywood glam-like, fits me, stretchy to accommodate food belly, would look lovely with a grey fur shrug
Cons - Not a great neckline for boobless girls - tho the shrug would help with that, cut on the bias which always makes a pear look a bit hippy but the dealbreaker is that it's too short. It would be perfect for someone with boobs between 5'-5'4"
Verdict - NO
Fab dress - so gutted

Dress Number 3
is another of Claire's....you can guess what's coming here...too short again and better for boobalicious girls. It was a bit like the one above but blue. The photos don't do it justice as it was swinging around my ankles.

Dress Number 4
The tipsy eBay purchase. After swearing that I was going to get a dress that had straps and preferably big ones AND a dress that wasn't backless...I put a bid on a blackless, strapless dress. Because that makes sense. Oh and did I mention it was a size 10? I was on a hiding to nothing here.

Pros - Great colour - it's purple..more so than the pictures show, it's got a big lace up back so I can be double-knotted into it to prevent a wardrobe malfunction, it's long enough, it's glam enough, it only cost £20 including postage.
Cons - it's a size 10 and although it fits, it's very neat across the upper thighs. So much so (and this is a bit TMI) it would have to be a Tena dress....do I need to explain further? It is impossible - without ripping the dress in some way. Equally, should Jamie and I indulge in a bit of hanky panky under the staircase in City Hall...well it just wouldn't work!
Verdict - NO
and now this one's for sale too!!!

UPDATE - Dress Number 5
My neighbour gave this to me today (Friday) to try on - it's just what I was looking for in terms of bling but I remember now why strapless dresses are not good on me....

Pros - sparkles..lots of them & the colour is perfect
Cons - it's too big in the waist and bust and my (no) boobs won't hold it up. One snag on my shoe and the dress will be around my ankles. It's also too long for me as my neighbour is 6ft so the chances of shoe snagging is too great. I'm wearing my highest heels in this photo :(
Verdict - NO
(but I'm closer to knowing what I want - this dress in a halter, cowl or boat neck style)

So where does this leave me....well I was in a bit of a pickle to be honest immediately after I took these photos. BUT then one of the brands I've recently worked with got in touch and they are sending out a dress in the post as I type. I have very high hopes...keep everything crossed for me and I'll update here as soon as I can.
Part 3 to come soon. I'm off now to do 50 sit-ups..

  1. I am so sad the purple one doesn't work - Jamie would love it you know. However, it's not to be.
I am so excited to see what mystery brand come up with and I KNOW you are going to look so amazing on the night.

Where shall I meet you so I can get under the dress for my grand 'Jamie I'm here' moment?

    2. Laughing out very, very loudly now ... Avril, I wouldn't be remotely surprised if Fiona did turn up!! I think you're right ... sparkles in the colour of dress number 5 with a halter neck. Jamie would LOVE that ... (and tight, so no room for Fiona!!)

    3. You make a good point Helen - tight dress it is... ;)

  2. Love the purple gown on you Avril....it's such an amazing colour and shape but a girl has got to be comfy......Tena and Jamie Dornan do not belong in the same sentence so I won't say anymore ;0)

Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve with the mystery brand! In all honestly I would love (in my dreams) to be invited to attend this type of event but it would have me quaking in my shoes over what to wear....especially as there is a theme of sorts!! You will rock it though......so I shall live vicariously through you at your award ceremony xx

    1. Thank you Ann Marie - I have seen a few in Coast that I love but I'm worried someone else will have the same. It's always the first port of call for a lot of women. I was keen to find something a bit different but it's not working out so well!! x

  6. Whilst I go in and out in different places to you, I feel your formal dress pain! I needed to pick up a dress last minute for a ball last year. After a day panicing around the usual suspects (John Lewis, HoF, Debenhams) I found an amazing dress in TK Maxx of all places. A third if the cost of the other dresses too! Good luck in your hunt. 1. TK Maxx would normally be one of the first places I go to so I have already been to one of their local shops with no luck. Though I do have 2 others I can try so they are going to be my next destination if this dress en-route to me doesn't work out! Thank you so much Nadine xx

    1. Thank you Jane - I just want to be comfortable so I can enjoy the night so I think this one that's coming will allow me to do so as it's not strapless or a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen! Lol at my hot Jamie date...I'm definitely getting my hopes up too high for that one! x

  11. Oh what a shame about the purple - it's so lovely on you. But a girl's gotta go... (which reminds me of an alarming convo with my daughter this morning who announced that she pulls skirts down to 'go' and was horrified at my suggestion to pull them up, like err... every other girl on the planet).

You will come up trumps, I just know it!

    1. Haha at the skirts up/down debate...I have had that one for ages with my girls, they just don't *get* it! I've insisted on pinafores for school to get them in the habit of it.
SO looking forward to our night out on Saturday Nic xx
