Styling The School Run - One Dress - Five Looks

I've mentioned in previous posts how I want to wear more dresses this autumn/winter. I wear skinny jeans too much so it's lovely to re-connect with my girly side and wear a dress now and again. So when Lands End contacted me about getting involved in a blogger project based around dresses, I was all over it! I got to choose my favourite dress from the gorgeous selection on the Lands End website - this tweed boucle shift dress that I knew I could wear lots of different ways..
Tweed Boucle Shift Dress - £80
I was pleasantly surprised by how light and wearable this dress is. It's not actually wool tweed, it's more like a boucle/chenille texture with a stretch, making it really comfortable to wear.
For look number 1, I kept it simple with a pair of flat pumps and a cropped cardigan. This was perfect for the school run on Friday and as well as a wolf whistle from a builder, my daughter said 'wow - your legs look nice mummy!' Confirmation that I wear jeans too much! At the school gate, friends were also impressed by the appearance of my legs and in conversation, it became apparent there is demand out there for wearable day dresses like this.
Look number 2 is a casual look for cooler weather. I've paired the dress with a long sleeved white top, scarf, black riding boots & opaque tights.

Look 3 is another casual one, this time with ankle boots. I'm not a huge fan of ankle boots with dresses (on me) but I'm going to try it out more this winter and see if it's a grower.
What you can't see very well in the pictures is that the tights are purple. The versatile colour of this dress means with the right accessories, you can wear it with burgundy, purple, bottle green and even brown.
Look number 4 is the workwear look. I'll save this for business meetings. I'm wearing the dress with a pink cotton shirt and some high heel shoe boots.
Now for the 5th look...the one I need some advice on. I'm attending Ladies Day at the races on Friday so I styled this dress with a headpiece. I have to say, I'm impressed that this dress can handle the head piece so well
But I can't make up my mind if it's race-day suitable? Husband thinks it's too wintery looking for a September race day but I quite like that it's not typical ladies day material.
I hope you enjoyed this post and I must of course thank Lands End for my new dress. I had so much fun styling it. There was lots of running up and down the stairs to change - goodness knows what the neighbours thought was going on over the fence!
Before I sign off, do check out two of the other bloggers who also took part in this Lands End challenge - both girls chose a different dress to mine so I think you'll enjoy..

  2. What a versatile dress! It really suits you and I love all of those looks - but especially number 3 - the scarf looks fantastic! Regarding the final look - I wonder if finer tights would also work and maybe lessen any 'winteryness'...?x

I'd check the weather for Friday - if it's anything like the weather we have coming our way then it's perfect for Ladies Day

    1. Hi Michelle, the scarf is from New Look and is unfortunately sold out but there is a similar one in Wallis on this link here: Wallis Not as full and long as the NL one but the colours are almost exactly the same. Thanks for dropping by and commenting Michelle, Avril x

  10. Fab post Avril and love how you've styled the dress in different ways - just shows how versatile dresses can be. Am a big fan of grabbing one out of the wardrobe when in a hurry...which is most of the time! I'll be posting my Land's End dress post this week - love a good blogger project! Have a great week! xx

  11. Great post. So interesting. I like the look with the knee high boots best, although I was quite taken by the addition of the purple opaques also. Re the races, whilst I think the fascinator and dress are really good, there's something a little off with the bare arms and opaque tights. It almost looks like you're prepared for two different seasons, summer on top & autumn down below! Perhaps the addition of a jacket?

  12. I'm going to put the cat amongst the pigeons.... I agree with your hubby! I absolutely love the dress on you, you wear it so so well in all the themes you've chosen but I don't know if it's for Ladies Day. We'd need to see it with definitely finer tights like Ash said?
Regardless it is stunning on you and hugs your figure incredibly well <3 xx

  15. i think it can work for a race day, for sure! and you'll be the only one that's warm :-)
My 2-cents worth is that I wouldn't wear the necklace, it interrupts with the lovely neckline of the dress and detracts from it....?

    1. Thank you Pippa...I struggled with the jewellery for this one. Didn't have anything that I was happy with. I think I'd leave the neckline bare if wearing again. Thanks for dropping by, Avril xx

  16. I think that dress is lovely, so versatile. I think it looks great with the ankle boots. Whats the sizing like for fit (ie. would it suit the more curvy among us)?

    1. Hi there, I'm a 10 on top with 12 hips so that's the 10 on me and it fits great. It helps that the material has a stretch to it. If it had been wool tweed, I may not have got away with the 10, hope that helps, Avril x

    2. Thanks for that, I'm between sizes too, always hard to know what to order. Think will try the 12. Looks like the perfect autumn work dress.

  18. It suits you so much Avril. Total workable for Race Day, but I'd add higher heels and red or plum lipstick & nails to glam it up a bit. And maybe lacey/patterned tights?

    1. Isn't it? I had never looked before except for cotton tops- they do a great range of long sleeved long in the body tops...not easy to find so I can recommend them also! Avril x

  22. A great post, I really should wear things differently and not just stick with the same combinations. Love the necklace you are wearing in the pink shirt photo, and I like your bracelets too. Are they Bibi bijoux? I like the range but it's a bit pricey for me and wish someone would do cheaper look-alikes!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you Kathy...the necklace in the pink shirt picture is actually from Boots! I always look out for cheaper long silver necklaces like this as you can wear them with anything. My bracelets are a mad mixture. There's a Pandora there but I don't have many charms on it as I like it that way, a Links of London with one charm on it and one that was given to me as a gift by a friend - has little balls on multiple chains. I wear this combo alot so next time I do, I'll do a close up of it! Thanks for dropping by! Avril x

Tried to make the one in galway but we had just landed and I was pooped. The hat is fab. Have fun at ladies day and post pictures. I love hats! Thanks for the lovely comment.

  28. Avril. Love these combos. I was told years ago that when wearing an outfit your arms should be the same colour as your legs I.e. nude tights and bare arms or dark tights and covered arms. S

    1. Thanks Claire....I think a 100 post would be quite a challenge...and you'd probably end up wearing it ways that you wouldn't genuinely wear it, if you see what I mean. Makes a great post to do a week of wearing a dress - 7 looks...incorporating work/home/casual/night out etc. Maybe a couple of us should do that some time? Could be fun! Avril x

    it looks great on you.

Unfortunatley £80 is too expensive for me now
as that would be over 100 euros

If you see anything similar on your travels in the shops
    that costs less
    please please let me know!

  35. Hi Fiona, this one from Topshop is similar but it's alot shorter. I would wear with thick black tights and boots. But it's a good price at £38 Topshop boucle dress or this one from Dorothy Perkins
Hope that helps...will keep an eye out if I'm out and about! Avril x
