The Merrell is probably a similar weight to this one. I wanted a darker colour which is why I opted for this parka - the navy is a more useful colour with the rest of my wardrobe. The Emily is also generous in fit too so you could layer it for the current weather. The bum covering is all about keeping dry I think....alot of the mountain/outdoors coats only come to the hips and I think that was the frustration.
