I'd been really impressed by some of the new range when Alex featured it over on The Frugality recently so I was already thinking that AW16 could be the season when the on-trend, Zara-loving 35-50 demographic starts to shop in Marks & Spencer again.
Now I was getting the opportunity to road test it...but the pressure of model and me was thrown into the mix. Luckily, I have a lovely friend Nic who blogs over at Strawberry Blonde Beauty who is amazing at photography so she was kind enough to offer to take some photos so that my efforts wouldn't seem amateurish in comparison to the lookbook.
There are two 'stories' in the lookbook from M&S this season and you can see them all on the website on this link. The 'story' from the lookbook that appealed to me most was called 'Romantic Explorer' and more specifically, these three items:
Here's the whole ensemble on me:
The coat is a wool blend in a gorgeous soft khaki marl colour. It's double breasted but not baggy and overwhelming to wear as DB coats can sometimes be. It looks great worn casually also and with this colour matching pretty much everything, I'd go so far as to say it's the only coat you'll need this winter...
This style of blouse isn't usually my style but ended up loving it when it arrived and I can't wait to wear it with boyfriend jeans for a more casual look. The blouse is largely sold out online but there were plenty in my local M&S the other day.
and just a little look at the button detail on the pocket of these wide leg trousers. They are a fantastic buy and are almost sold out online. I've seen plenty in my local store though. I originally bought a 10L but changed them for a 10R as the Long was SO long. Good news for taller girls.
as for the shoes...check out these bronze beauties that have insolia comfort built in. Absolutely gorgeous to wear and oh so comfortable
I'm wearing the size 6 in these and they are a good fit - perhaps a little generous so if in-between, you might want to size down. These are the gold colour way so they're not as gold looking as they are online. Definitely more of a bronze. I actually think it's a shame to wear them under wide trousers so I'm going to enjoy wearing these with skirts and culottes this winter.
The whole outfit came in at just under £200 but each piece is going to work with lots of other items in my wardrobe so it's a good investment. I've already worn the trousers to work with a white shirt and flat pumps.
Is it the season for the M&S turnaround? Time will tell I guess. I know that there are a couple of other pieces I am keen to get my hands on and that's a good sign as I definitely didn't have that feeling last year. I really want to be eager to shop there again so here's hoping.
Oh and before I go, if you're tempted but would love a discount, there's 20% off all clothing and footwear this weekend (16-18 September) for all Sparks card holders and I also know there are friends and family vouchers floating about from the most recent M&S credit card statements as my neighbour just gave me one!
UPDATE - I've got links for a few of the other bloggers taking part in this M&S challenge. Go check out Nikki at Midlife Chic, Michelle from Retrochicmama ,Lisa from The Sequinist (Lisa and Michelle both styled the coat but in a really different way!) and Elizabeth from What Lizzy Loves chose the same outfit as mine!
Hope you have a great weekend,
Ax

Wow! You're right, it looks like a different coat (and see how much longer it is in the Lookbook photo? I was really expecting it to be more like that).
ReplyDeleteI adore the lace top on you; it is absolutely perfect with your hairstyle. I love the trousers too. I bought those when they first came out, out of fear that they would sell out like the hero pieces always do at M&S!
So nice to find your blog! xx
Thanks for dropping by Lisa and yes...that coat does look longer in the lookbook....strange?! I can forgive them as the quality is amazing and I know I'm going to wear it loads. Good move on the trousers as they are pretty much sold out online now. So nice to 'meet' online...have a great blogging week! Avril x
DeleteI think the lace top is absolutely beautiful and it looks great on you as do the shoes. I will certainly be popping down to my local store.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pauline - I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived as I was afraid it would be quite fussy and that it might be scratchy and uncomfortable to wear. It's not at all - the only complaint is that the wee button on the neck at the back is a bit finicky to close but Nic who took the photos was able to help me out with that! Avril x
DeleteYou look amazing - so chic and elegant! Love it, K xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kat - it's just such a treat to get proper photos done, makes all the difference! x
DeleteCan I ask what size coat you went for? you look very elegant in the outfit. I have the blouse and love it.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna - sorry for the delay replying. I went for the size 10 and it fits well - I'm a 10 on top. It's got room for heavier tops underneath still. Lucky you getting the blouse - it seems to be sold out now! x
DeleteThe whole outfit looks fabulous on you. I tried on the trousers but they did nothing for me at all. I think you have to have slimmer legs to get away with them which you and Elizabeth obviously have!! 😊
ReplyDeleteThank you Jan - I think the wide leg trousers aren't for everyone, especially if you're bigger in the bust. They work well for me as I'm smaller on top than I am on the bottom so they skim over that I guess? A bootleg trouser might be worth trying perhaps? Thanks for your lovely comment Jan x
DeleteHi Avril, I love the look you put together - as you know, the shoes are a particular favourite of mine! I've added your picture to my post, I hope it's ok - I'm collecting the great outfits that the over 40 bloggers put together for the challenge. x
ReplyDeleteHi Nikki and THANK YOU for including my picture. I don't mind one bit - in fact, I'm honoured! I will add photos of all of you guys too actually. I only realised on Sunday that others had done the challenge so I wasn't organised enough then. I'll have time to do it later. xx
DeleteHi Avril. I love this outfit (of course) and really like how the bronze shoes look with it too as well as the olive pea coat. I hope you don't mind, but I have pinched one of your pictures and added it to my post with a link to your blog. Thank you very much for linking to my blog. The photographs are beautiful by the way. What a lovely setting. Love Liz xxx www.whatlizzyloves.com xxx
ReplyDeleteLove this outfit on you Avril and can't wait to see how you style the items in different ways - I think the blouse and shoes will look brilliant dressed down too. Thank you for the shout out! x
