I'm worried I built this post up too much...and the weight of expectation sits on my shoulders...eek! It is the Holy Grail of fashion - the Perfect Jeans (in my opinion) and I'll be up front with you now. I'm not giving the answer for everyone. What I am going to do today is tell you about the jeans that have transformed my wardrobe over the past 6 months.
Also, I could be talking a big load of fluff here. I'm not a stylist nor do I pour over Vogue every month to find out what's on the catwalk. I just felt my wardrobe became a bit more on-trend when I embraced this jean style. It wasn't easy...it took a lot of perseverance and reading of other blogs and trying on (and trying on again) and being brave...Boyfriend jeans.
Don't click out yet - because that's what I would have done a year ago. I thought they were only for young women with legs that go on for miles. I thought they would add bulk to my lower half, I thought they wouldn't work with all my wardrobe. And I was probably right to some degree but the trick I was missing is that they give a youthful look to your wardrobe. No, they're not as flattering as a dark pair of skinnies but they are more on-trend than indigo skinnies and unlike a lot of trends out there, they are relatively easy to incorporate into a busy mum wardrobe.
(and they don't show up the dirt like indigo skinnies....just sayin)
I now have two pairs - both from Gap. A straight leg pair and a wider leg pair and I estimate that I wear them equally as much as I wear my skinny jeans now. Here are a few of my favourite looks from the past 6 months or so..
Now I know they are not everyone's cup of tea - that's ok. I say time and time again, this blog is not about styling you all. It's just about sharing what works for me. I was completely against Boyfriend jeans and now I love them and in terms of buying one item that renewed my wardrobe - this was it for me.
If you're not yet a convert but interested in trying them out, here are a few of the best from the high street at the moment..
Gap Sexy Boyfriend (25% off until Sunday with GAP25 at the checkout) |
River Island Mid Wash Slouch Jeans |
M&S Indigo Collection Slim Leg Boyfriend Jeans |
and if you can tolerate a few rips - these are good value:

So I know I've not won everyone over - but I hope you can see how I've come to love my boyfriends...in my humble opinion, The Perfect Jeans.
Happy Friday lovelies - I've got swimming lessons with a reluctant 4 year old to look forward to this afternoon. The wine is chilling as you read...

I love boyfriend jeans too but I like a 'skinny' boyfriend if that makes sense?!
ReplyDeleteI am gutted the Gap ones didn't look right on me and yet they look like they were made for you.

They change the Gap ones each season so worth trying them again - both of mine are Gap and yet, so totally different....weird! And like you, I do prefer them slim fitting Ax
DeleteI completely understand what Fiona means ... I prefer a 'skinny boyfriend' as well if that makes any sense. I can't wear them, which is really annoying - but unless they're worn rolled up slightly, they just look a bit crap. I'm also not sure how well they work on a smaller frame, as I think they would just shorten my legs even more, which I really don't want! My fave pic of you is the top RH one, where you're wearing them with heels. I also remember a fab pic of you wearing them with a black blazer and leopard print heels ... and frankly I was jealous, lol!!!! Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt was seeing them on the smaller frame that convinced me Helen - seeing Sue and Marlene totally rock them in London made me determined to try them. It's all about the right footwear and top half and I think you could totally rock them too! I had to try about 6 different styles to find the right ones - I think it's the same with most jeans ... you'll find the right ones if you shop around ... frustrating as that is! xx
DeleteOh I was wondering if it might be some boyfriend jeans or those gorgeous Maison Scotch jeans which I am spitting jealous over. And I love how you kept on trying till you found the pair as I know how difficult it is because I have spent the summer looking for a spare pair incase some of mine wear out and to date - no luck. That's how hard it is. However so is finding the perfect skinnies, bootlegs or any other style of jean out there and it is all personal and how you perceive you look in them. I love the boyfriends because they just keep everything that little bit more casual and like you say "young". And if shorties like me and Marlene can wear them - well that says a lot. I'm with you on the slimmer fit styles as well - just that touch more flattering keeping eveything more streamlined.
ReplyDeleteI love these on you....I tried them but went for a too pale of wash and they went back. I ended up with a pair from Zara and yes as you put it perfectly ' made me feel alittle younger'
ReplyDeleteYay!! And you're right you look so young:) I love how you style them - very simple and no fashion victim in sight. I can't wait for the sneaker/trainer post:)
ReplyDeleteNot going there Joanna!! Tho I may have procured some wedge trainers over the summer....xx
DeleteI loved boyfriend jeans. The Paige ones I've been wearing for a few years have been in the dryer a bit too often... I need a new pair. The Gap look great on you. Maybe I'll try them!
ReplyDeleteI have a Gap pair very similar to your straight leg pair Avril. I wasn't sure if they were really my thing.I might try again now with the ankle boots and blazer combo....love all your styling here:)
ReplyDelete~Anne xx
I finally found my perfect skinny boyfriend jean this year too! The Brady from Asos.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that tip off Claire - off to have a look at them! Ax
DeleteI'm a late convert to 'boyfriend' jeans (as with so much else!) I now love mine from Topshop, so much so that I bought a 'spare' pair from Primark. And I actually quite like the look of that last pair from New Look. I have no rips in my repertoire yet... could be time to change that! x
ReplyDeleteI've never been a fan of boyfriend jeans, but have to say I really like these and how you have styled them. Surprised at how good they look with heels.
ReplyDeleteIt's taken me a while to come round to them as well but I so love them on other people now. I think I am a tad lazy as know the skinny jeans fit and work for me, I just need to invest more time like you say in finding some. Your's look really good on you Avril. Hope the swimming lesson goes well. I am off to get them bathed early & trying to find some inspiration for dinner!!!x
ReplyDeleteI think you look great in these jeans but you are so right about the length of time it takes to find a good pair. I have been really pleased with my White Company ones I just can't wait for them to get a bit more ( naturally) distressed
ReplyDeleteAvril, I love straight cut, more fitted BF jeans as you know....they look fab with everything. Such a great look......I'd wear all of your outfits.x
ReplyDeleteMy favourite jeans are Top Shop but my second favourite are Gap and I have three Gap jeans. Amazing quality and the sizing is good too - who would have guessed I was a UK Size 8!!!
ReplyDeleteI rarely reach for the skinnies now since falling in love with the bf's. they are definitely my go to jean. So glad you stuck with it and found the right pairs for you, I knew our 'gentle persuasion' would pay off! Some gorgeous looks here, u really rock them lady!! X
ReplyDeleteThank you Trea - so kind and thanks for all the inspiration to try them in the first place! Ax
DeleteI'm a boyf convert thanks to you, Trea & Kat! I'd love a slimmer fitting pair too & think you look amazing in yours! Ax
